OK, I've had a look in the archives for this but everything I saw seemed to relate to replacing the exhaust system when doing a muffler delete. I have a couple of questions specific to exxing out the muffler on a stock exhaust;
I just looked under the truck and I'm wondering if there is an easy way to remove the huge stock muffler and cut and hook up the tailpiece to come out in front of the rear tire? If not, how bad would it be to leave it short? I mean soundwise, I don't want to annoy myself or the neighbors any more than I already do.
Then, the obvious mechanical question...I'm sure this decreases back-pressure and helps increase flow but is it opening it up too much? Would I create problems at the turbo if I did this?
I will definitely get to putting a turbo back on it later but as I've mentioned, shipping it here individually would be pricey so it'll have to wait. Is this all a good, or a bad idea?
You could do the in front of the tire thing with the tip. Might have to clean your tires s little more often. There are people that has that setup. Don't worry about back pressure, don't need it in a diesel.
saying adios to the muffler was one of the first things I did. i took it to a local shop and they cut it out and put in a piece of pipe for $25 IIRC. i even kept the muffler just in case I ever wanted to put it back.
lowered my EGTs and I have not had any probs. Plus the sounds is really cool and not offensive.
Go for it. I pulled it off over a year ago and simply left the pipe end under the bed. There's not much soot at all and you'll gain about 2-3 lbs of boost.
Now I'm in the process of welding up a pipe to come out in front of the tire using the leftover parts from the old pipe. I also hacked up the old muffler and ran a pipe straight through it so it "looks" legal. (PA requires mufflers to pass inspection)
Thanks mucho, that's what I was hoping to hear. Unless someone tells me soon this is going to make an awful racket, I'll plan on doing this next weekend. I guess for now I'll cut it off at the muffler entry point and see if there's an easy (quick & cheap) way to fab something to get it out from under the body. Once I ship some stuff down then I'll buy a stainless straight through.....don't have any inspections/ laws to worry about here!
I ditched my muffler (stock exhaust) over 100k miles ago and NEVER LOOKED BACK. I used a piece of stock exhaust (for free) I got from a place that installs alot of aftermarket exhausts on diesels. Paid muffler man like $40 to cut out old and weld in new. It worked out great using a peice with a bend in it to replace muffler, but many will spin the piece in front of muffler 180* (reweld hanger in right place!) and use a straight peice of 3.5" pipe. (stock system is SS, btw!) Difference in sound in cab is negligable, outside at idle is different, but not much louder. Outside truck pulling a grade pushing 25psi of boost - its talkin' to ya! I love it!
I'm still chicken to do it to the Excursion. Can't stand to hear wifey complain - hate to give her a reason! Might just do a turbo back w/muffler...
pwstroker69, are you just gona cut the muffler off at the input and remove the rest of the (tail end) exhaust system? or weld in a straight pipe in place of the muffler?
(I aint the sharpest rock in the quary).
Well, from reading older posts as well as the answers I've had here it sounds as though it might not be *too* obnoxious, without the tailpipe below the muffler, or am I wrong? I don't have any laws or inspections to worry about and I'm not *often* out too much after dark, so a little louder is fine.
I just don't want it to sound awfully loud so everyone knows I'm coming.
Nope, shouldn't be a problem at all, Ryder moving trucks do it. You might want to get a "turned down tip" at the end to get the exhaust pointed away from the underneath of the truck, help in less sooting and heat. Just a thought.
I have a muffler delete and it is a little louder than some would lead you to believe. It's not crazy loud but mine raps pretty good when you get on the go pedal.
I haven't had a muffler in a long time, I run it all through a 4inch exhaust and my only regrets are I didn't do it sooner and I sometimes wish I would have went with 5 inch. Just make sure local inspection laws will allow you to do it. They are really tight some places.
Had my stock muffler cut out and replaced with a glasspack. It sounded good but ripped everything out and went with MBRP duals with the muffler(Twags is right, PA. muffler law). Never looked back... Good luck..
I did mine some time ago and like it. You will definitely hear the whistling "flutter" of the turbine. Some like it some don't. The sound is nearly inaudible with the windows up, really noticeable with them down especially near a fence or like obstacle.
