No crank

My 94 explorer, 2wd, 4.0l, will not crank. The theft does not come on. when you turn the key nothing happens. I can apply 12v to the red/blue wire on the start solenoid with the key in the on position and get it to turn over and run. i have been trying to find something about it by searching but cannot not find anything close. We did have the trans out to replace the front seal and torque converter. It has ran for several days and now it will not crank. When i check the red/blue wire on the start solenoid i get 5v when the ignition is turned to the start position. Can anyone help me out whith what generates the 12v that i should have in start, like where does it originate, run to befor it gets to the solenoid?

thanks,
roger

It's wired from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans & to the starter relay.

Will it start in neutral?

Pull the connector off of the neutral safety switch & jump it with a paper clip, does it crank now?

Jump the red/light blue. The others are for the backup lights.

At least thats how my 87 is wired.

is that on the round connector at the top, or the bottom square one?
the weird part is that there is 5v to the starter solenoid.

Are you seeing the 5 volts all the time or only when you turn the key to start?

The only thing under the hood thats 5 volts is the feeds to all the engine sensors. If the 5 volts is there all the time, the wiring is crossed somewhere.

If the 5 volts is only there with the key turned to start theres a bad connection somewhere.

Not sure which connector on the trans, but you need to find that red/light blue wire.

BTW, there should also be a connector in the red/light blue wire somewhere under the hood. Probably drivers side.

It's between the neutral switch & starter relay. See if you can find it & check for 12 volts there.

If I had a 94 Explorer I would also have the factory wiring diagrams (EVTM) for it & could tell you more.

Ok getting desperate now as i have to get it on the road.

There is 5v on it in run and start. I chased it through the wire harness all the way back to 2 connectors on the drivers side. one is gray the other is black. on the black connector ther is a gray/yellow (or could be light blue or light green and yellow) that ties into an orange wire from the gray connector, which both then join and change colors to Pink to the park neutral switch. when you turn the key to start it does pass the voltage, which happens to be 5v, to the red/lt blue wire at the starter solenoid. chasing the 5v back to the black connector on the wire that is either gray/yellow (see above) that is there in run and start and on the pink. the Haynes manual sucks for chasing this out.

Does anyone know what the voltage should be on the pink wire to the park neutral switch? WHere it comes from, what generates it, what might be causing the problem with the 5v?

Is there somewhere that I can download the wiring diagrams for the truck that will better show what and where things should be?

thanks,
roger

I'd check out the ignition switch itself. Test for 12v at the Red-Lt blu wire key in the start position. If its working at that point follow it out testing it every point until you find the problem.
You'll probably find the ignition switch itself is bad.

Steering column diagram for switches,

94 Explorer 4.0L engine wiring diagram,

There is some specific instructions for replacing the ignition switch, if you need them just ask.

Ok thanks, will check that tomorrow. had to rip out the wire harness to the transmission as well as it had melted some wires together due to it resting against the egr pipe off th exhaust. Fixed those problems and still has the same issue. Will check the ignition wires tomorrow.

Just in case it is the switch, what are the instructions for replacing so i won't have to bother anyone again if that is indeed the issue.

Thanks,
roger

Why they got ya removing the steering wheel I couldn't say but I doubt you'd have to. May suggest it just to get it out of the way to work, I can't see it having to come off to get the switch out. I haven't had the pleasure of pulling a ignition switch on one of these..........yet!

If you need something more, like a enlarged area of the wiring diagram so you can see it easier just ask.

ok, i found the switch on the steering column, and it still is only 5v. pulled it out and checked resisitance and it is all good. The only other thing that shows to be inline woudl be the anti-theft controller. Where would i find that at? It would make sense that it would be active disabling the starter circuit from working so it cannot be stolen. just a far reach out, but you never know.

Does anyone know where the anit-theft module is located at?
