Happy Camper!

Hey All,

My F5 is coming along nicely. I got some help squaring away my brakes. All 4 are working nicely. New master, new solid line to rear, new rubber lines rear and front, and 2 new front cylinders, lines bled and fronts adjusted properly. What a difference! I can safely continue working the bugs out on my local dirt, farm, bird sanctuary, marina road. Tightened up the passenger side fender, put some more tension on the throttle return spring, so now it drops back to idle better, installed passenger side mirror......I'm moving in a good direction. My test track is about a 2 mile course. It's not overheating but does get pretty hot. Gauges not working yet. Advice welcomed here with any temp gauges upgrades etc. Also I think I need a bigger exhaust. Currently, I have a 2 into 1 set-up and its very small diameter. I think I'll get much better power with a dual set-up. Any low budget ideas. The motor I believe is stock, but it does have an 8BA stamp.

If your radiator hasn't been disassembled and rodded out, or very thoroughly chemically cleaned by professionals, I would start there. You can screw mechanical (bulb-type) gauges into the stock sender locations and run them up to the dash temporarily to see just how hot it's getting. Keep in mind on a flattie that the surface of the head is right there, no valve cover to shield you from the water jacket. It may not really be that hot.

Hey Ross,
what I do is touch the metal tubes between the radiator and the thermostats, sometimes I touch the radiator too. I guess about 5 months ago I flushed out the block, both sides, and the heater core, and made new gaskets for the thermostats, and replaced the hoses from the stats to the metal tubes, I removed the radiator and flushed it out real good with water only. Ross are there any gauges that have temperature values like a thermometer that I can just lift the hood and read how hot the motor is running? Thanks for your response.
