Do you really need a sealer

i've read that a primer sealer seals the old colors in and prevents bleed through into the new finish, but if i sprayed the WHOLE truck with 2k primer would it still be required for me to spray a sealer over the 8k primer?

Thanks

You should not need a sealer if you are painting over fresh primer. I am doing my body work on my 77 f150 a little at a time, so by the time all my body work is done the panels may not be exactly uniform from panel to panel. Therefore I plan to use a tinted sealer to give the whole truck a uniform surface for my bc/cc to sit on.

Yep cujo is right. A car all primed with 2k primer and final sanded would be fine to paint on, although an epoxy used as a sealer over this may give a small amount of longterm benefits and chip resistance. A 2k primer is somewhat porous, whereas a sealer is not. It may be benefitial to use a sealer over the 2k if it would help with coverage of the base. Say you used that ugly buff colored 2k sealer (who thought of coloring primer that) and you are spraying a fairly transparent color over it, so the color of the primer doesn't drastically effect the final color without spraying a real lot of coats to get full coverage. It may be benefitial to spray a color or shade that is more benefitial under it. Many of the bigger manufacturers will give a shade recommendation for coverage when the mixing formula for that color is looked up. Dupont has valueshade, and other manufacturers similar.

Think you will be fine. as long as you have it all one color. I had a medium blue that covered for sheet once(even had a note on the mixing formula it was a poor coverer (it was also a cheap line of base), but normally don't seem like blue is too bad. When you go to get your paint mixed up, you could ask if there is a recommended shade to use under it listed on the mixing formula (the better lines at least do) and see if what is recommended is somewhat close to your grey. Do you know what the color code is, and the manufacturer (ford?) When you have your mixed paint, stir it, and then pull out and take a look at the paint stick. If it looks really thin and transparent on the edges of the stick, could have a poor coverer, and without a bunch of coats, you primer choice could affect the final color without having actual total coverage. But my guess would be you are going to be fine, sand it and shoot.

not trying to be disrepectful here,,,but.....

It mostly depends on which type of clear the color is made from ,, some types of balancing clears need to be re -formulated ,,

If you have enough paint ,,& aren't blending ,,,all colors , other than candy's are opaque,,,,
I have Never needed to seal a car ,for color consistancy ,,ever ...If you are trying to use less paint ,,start out with a primer that is close to the color you are painting ..If not true ,,you would never be able to blend within a panel....& it can be done ,even with a 3 stage.
In 35 years ,I have never had prime Or sealer coat show through the color ,or affect the out come, not one single time ....

I do argree with Kenseth on this point , (actually more than just one point ,,but for now,),sand it & shoot it,,,use a good quality paint .

If you are aiming for show quality ,,start out with No paint ,,then the are absolutely No issues

If the vehicle is factory paint ,,there will not be any bleed through issues...

Painting over partially primed areas ,,will bring up some problems (swelling ,crazing ,bulls eyes , ect) that can only be avoided by stripping ,or allowing everything to dry completley(all solvents out),,or stripping ...then only dealing with the surfacer drying time

Make sure ,before you prime ,,that the primer never extends past the area you have preped ,,(320 or 400)

never put prime coat over shiny paint ,,the top coat will seep under the edge of the primer & cause swelling ...

But in our business ,,time is a luxury no one will afford us ...

bbbrrriinnnggg,,,"when's my car gonna be done ? "

"Well I was working on it ,,then the phone rang"....
