check engine light

Last Sunday my Check Engine Light came on and after starting the truck and it shifts into second, the "off" light on the shifter starts to blink. Any ideas? I haven't taken it to get the CEL code yet but thought I would come here since that other light is blinking.I haven't been driving the X for about a month. (gas goes further in my grand prix) 2001 X V10

Seeing as yours is a 2001 like mine, it may have the defective mechanical diode one-way clutch that destroys these trannies.

Does it shift smoothly into second gear or do you have to take your foot off the pedal for it to shift?

it shifts smoothly. No noise or anything. breaks started squeeking but I doubt that would set off the CEL. I need new breaks and tires. I'll take it to auto zone tomorrow (sunday) and have them read off the code and see what it is. I havent had time this week (62 hours of work, I love overtime)

Autozone told me it has a P0500 code. They said it's the speed sensor circuit

Sounds like a Vehicle Speed Sensor that you need to get.

Check the connector for corrosion, and make sure the pins are present and clean. Also make sure its seated well, and that the connector doesn't feel loose on the sensor. You can try to take something and very carefully scratch the connection points with something sharp to ensure a good connection if it looks dirty. Next follow the wiring as far as you can and look for breaks, rips, rubs, scrapes and scratches in the wire insulation. I wouldn't throw $ at a sensor before checking these things.

How is your speedo acting?

You can also have problems with the speed sensor if the gear lube needs to be changed. If you find metallic shavings on the sensor change the gear lube also.
