so my friend has this 93 f-350 4x4 with a 460. The odd thing is that it has a 3-speed overdrive tranny. It only has 3 gears, and the o/d switch on the gear selector does function. I was under the impression that both the aod and e4od both had 4 gears???
I'd put money on the E4OD, too--it's a 3-speed tranny with overdrive, for a total of 4 "gears". 3rd gear is a 1:1 ratio, thus making the final "gear" an overdrive gear at around 0.74:1 or so. The other auto tranny option on an F350 in this era was a C6 (generally fleet vehicles only), which is a 3-speed, no overdrive. 3rd gear is still the 1:1 ratio. The AOD was a 3-speed with overdrive (4 gears total) as well, but was only in the half-tons and cars behind the 300 and the 302 (and some smaller car engines also).
Ok... I'll say it again... It has a total of 3 forward gears. Only three. Not four. Three. There are three gears. Only three. It's like it has the same gearing as a C-6, but has overdrive... Only three forward gears. Only three. Not four, three.
Just a remainder that AOD's don't hookup to bigblock 460's but only small blocks (no exceptions). E4OD's has 3 gear selections not 4 but with the OD delete button (I believe)!!!
Yeah its not an e4od. I have a truck with an e4od, it has a total of four forward gears. The vehicle in question has a total of three forward gears with the od button.
From your signature it looks like you have trucks with a C6 and an E4OD. Why don't you crawl underneath and compare the pan of the tranny in question to your trucks. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between a the two.
Your question is impossible to answer the way you phrased it. You describe no such transmission that Ford ever used in that truck.
If it has a functioning overdrive, then it can't be the C6. The only other automatic tranny that will bolt up to that motor without an aftermarket adapter is the E4OD.
So you have an E4OD that is skipping a gear - probably 1st. Takes off kinda slow I bet?
unfortunatly, it looks like neither the c6 or e4od. I guess it's some sort of aftermarket thing. Or maybe another make that was adapted to the 460 bellhousing. It's just weird.
How are you counting the number of gears in this tranny? If you are counting gearshift positions; there are only 3 with a button to turn overdrive off when needed/desired. If you are counting shifts points you will feel/hear 3 shifts for 4 gears. How are you counting the gears is the question.
