just put a edelbrock performer 4bbl intake and edelbrock 600cfm carb on my 72 F250 with a stock 360 and auto trans. it idles and runs fine at first with 4 barrels working until it shifts into 2nd & 3rd and then bogs down to 35 or 40 and seems like its starving for fuel. do I need a different fuel pump for the 4bbl? timing looks good...I'm lost

NO, You do not need a different fuel pump to run the 4 barrel.
You didn't say in your post, but did you run the truck normally before installing the intake. Have you checked for vacuum leaks.
One test that you might do is unplug the gas line near the carb along with the coil wire. Place the gas line in the opening of a pop or water bottle, and have someone turn the engine over a few turns. If you are getting nice squirts of gas, then the pump at first glance should be working.
There are several items that can cause your issue, but if the pump is functioning properly it should supply a 600 cfm 4 barrel at street conditions. IMHO
I just replaced my 600 cfm edelbrock because of simular problems, I replaced it with a holley 600 cfm problem solved. There is something wonky with those edelbrocks and everyone I talk with about them say they are nothing but problems.
thanks all...I checked everything and spark and fuel was good. I didn't like the girth of the edelbrock anyway so I bought new holley...Problem solved.
I guess that great running edelbrock my bud sold me wasn't that great after all...
