What would you do?

First off I like my truck and the only reason it has been back to the dealer is because of the seat recall. My question is, I have a job one truck and I don't know when it is in the regin mode. I have owned it for a year now and it's main purpose is to pull our 5th wheel, it's not a dailey driver and has less than 7000 miles on it and it gets better mpg than most are reporting.

Should I have it reflashed so the message center is telling me when this is happening or not, is there any other benefit to do this?

It can be difficult to tell if the truck is in regen. Some of the symptoms are.. a slight loss of power, runs rough, smell of fuel,,You will always see a drop in MPG I mean like 4 5 MPG. The best and most accurate way is to have a Pre turbo EGtT guage as the egt temps will increase to a high level and stay there till regen is complete. You can't miss that..

I would have the reflash anyhow...

I agree I think the reflash is the best option. The problem with this approach is FMC does not want to flash the trucks. When I have taken mine to the service shop I get the same response if it does not show these symptoms we will not flash the truck. I have told them it is showing these signs FMC checks the truck and I get we could not get your truck to replicate the symptons you are describing so it wa not flashed. I could understand if FMC had to use a techs time that consisted of hours but to wlak outside connect the computer and flash the truck in all of less than an hour that is no excuse. The other side of the issue is what if a flash creates new problems, this is called engineering and you continually work to make the problem go away. It appears FMC has said we are lsoing money and we are surely not going to lose it performing reflashes for problems that might not truly be there. I have stepped down from the soapbox.

My position is who cares...if you don't know when it is in regen what does it matter. It will do it whether or not you know so why worry about being notified. If you are happy with your truck as is leave it that way.

My truck is a J1 and was built 03/07. My son is a ford diesel tech and when he came down for a visit last month he brought his laptop and reflashed my truck with the latest software. He told me that some J1s will show the message and some won't. Naturally mine didn't display the regen info but the truck drives and shifts much better. Might have picked up 1 or 2 MPG in the process.
