Well the right differential seal is leaking on my 03 Mountaineer at 68K. I have a Ford service CD that I bought on Ebay which describes using a thin fork-like special tool to separate the halfshaft once the suspension is out of the way. Has anybody done this repair themselves & what is the tool for?
This is on top of the ABS light which is now on & the wheel bearing noise in the rear which has gotten worse. I have done a lot of reading & I don't think this is the whine which everybody else has complained about. Anyway, while the diff is out, I will inspect the gear mesh pattern & make sure everything is OK.
I've been a loyal Ford owner for almost 30 years but I have to say that these problems are disappointing for a vehicle with far less than 100k on it. I would expect this kind of problem if it had 150k on it. Also replaced: alternator at 35k, rear AC blend motor, rear door lock. Not to mention that there are more rattles in the dash & door panels than any car I've owned. Not a very good record.
