I thought about doing that.

These HP d530c computers came with XP Pro on 'em.

Everyone in the IT dept. thought that the 'Factory' restore cd would do the 'trick'.

I still can't help but believe that something in the hdd controller (or other circuit) is 'toast'.
EXCEPT, the pc that I got had been in use until 1 week prior to me getting it.

Yea that is odd it worked fine a week before you got it,

just a thought is it SATA or IDE ? wondering if you can run HDD master on Secondary channel to see if your problem is just on that channel or perhaps a bad HDD or smoked MB

MB is both SATA and PATA (IDE).
Drives are PATA (IDE) however.

HDD. . . swapped out for one that had been working a couple of hours previously.
Same issue.

Secondary does the same as the primary.
Swapped out CD drives (2 of 'em) original as Master. . . secondary drive as Slave. . . then reversed.
Same issue.

I wish that I had been able to get a screenshot of one of the messages.

It said something to the effect of, "Insufficient Memory to perform task."

Video Card!!! Got ripped up bad before on that. I think it was waiting for a driver to load before GUID.
XP does not have all the drivers for every card but has some that will substitute that will work most of the time, some times not. In the original setup the whole program and drivers were blown onto the hard drive for install at startup when called for durring hardware detection with URLS to point to these driver setup files.

Short of a manufacturers setup CD you have done almost every thing exsept shoot the dang thing but if you have another AGP video if the system takes it or a PCI if you shut off AGP in BIO's try it, don't think you have any thing to lose at this point.

Thanks for the links, everyone!!!!

Here's where I am, now.

One of the IT guys asked me to go down the hall to one of the 'admins' office.

I walked in to her office and he pointed to a pc that was running.

He shut down the machine and disconnected it.
He set up her new pc and escorted me back to my office with the admin's old pc.
He opened the pc, removed the 'carriage' that had the MB on it, complete with another 512 MB of RAM and handed it to me, and said, "Here ya go. We BOTH know that this one works."

This CPU is a 2.8 GIG P-IV. . . same Foxconn MB.

I'll see what this one will do, this evening.

Yes, I did.

As I type this, I am on the 'trouble' pc.

I now have XP installed, all updates, Linksys wireless ethernet adapter working, AVG Antivirus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Ad Aware, and a couple of programs.

Time to shut 'er down and upgrade the RAM to 1 GIG.

Motherboard was installed in less than 5 minutes. I really like this 'carrier' that HP/Compaq put into this case. The MB mounts to it, and the 'carrier' slides into place and locks with a 'pinch' type connector.
Really slick and painless. (Did I actually say 'painless'?? Bovine Scatology!)

Thanks everyone, for your help!!!!!!!!

FTE is Number 1!!!!! (For a reason.)

Thanks again!
