Ok guys I know this might seem like a stupid question, but I have a 2002 F-150 4X2 with a 4.6 (not that it matters) and and I want/need a Limited Slip Differential. I currently have just a regular dif with 3.09 gears (I think) and I was wondering if there was anyway to install a LSD without doing axle swap? What would be the cheapest? Thanks for any input.
You can install a LS diff. using your own axle. That's what most guys do "including myself". Around here "Arizona" it would run about $800.00 for the LS diff and install. You might be able to find an axle for a better price but It would hard to find one with the factory LS that match your gears. Most trucks came with 3.55. If you have the 3.08 gears it might be better to get an axle with the 3.55 and LS. That would make your truck pull alot better.
Another advantage to the axle swap method would be you get the larger rear end, or at least you could look for one. An axle from the 5.4 will have a larger rear end and help towing capacity.
For reference you have an 8.8 rear, the larger rear is a 9.75. I don't think I've ever seen a 3.08 LS in these trucks. Would be interesting to see what is out there.
Yeah I was thinking it would be better with 3.55 gears but how much would that effect my gas mileage? Normally I wouldn't ask but gas is like $1.30 a liter here in Ontario. Also how hard would be to do that axle swap myself?

There should be a metal tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts that will tell you the ring gear diameter and gear ratio of the truck. Find one at a salvage yard that has the same info on it but with a "L" in the ratio numbers (3L08 or 3L55). Not sure but I'm thinking if you do change ratio you'll need to reprogram the speedometer. Might be easier to do the axle swap than replace the carrier assembly.
