Safe to run 40 PSI in my tires?

Hi guys and gals. I searched first but couldn't find anything. Maybe I didn't put in the correct phrase..?

I was wondering if it would be okay to run 40 psi in my Dayton Mud Terrains? 31x10.50x15, supposed to run 32 psi. Talked to a guy the other day with identical tires and size and he says he runs his at 40 psi with no problems.

The reason I'm wanting to raise my tire pressure is for gas mileage / less work for the motor. Is this a safe thing to do? I don't drive much faster than 60 mph on the highway. 85% of my driving is city driving, on rough roads. Right now I have my tires at 35 psi.

I know this question may seem paranoid but I don't want to hurt anything / anyone / or bust a tire.

Thanks in advance everyone!

What does your max tire press. say? My tires say 44psi and I run them at 40 with no problems.

Back in the day, you could get a Bronco with 31x10.50s on it from the factory...recommended tire pressure for them was 35 front/41 rear.

I have my 31s set at 40 PSI all around...I seem to have as good tire wear as can be expected.

Just curious, Bill...where did you come by the 32 PSI figure?

I'm running all my cars tires about 5psi over to help a little with the MPG as well. You might notice the middle of your tires wearing a little quicker, but you wont kill anything.

The maximum allowed pressure is molded into the side of the tire. Use that. The recommended Ford pressure (good ride) is on the door jamb (but that isn't what you're asking).

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback! I'm sure this question has been asked before but I couldn't find it in search.

I'll check my tires and make sure I know what the max psi is.

I personally wouldn't run any higher than vehicle manufacturer recommended psi and for sure not higher than max psi on the tire, but I run my 33x9.50's at about 15psi in my BroncoII all the time and that is perfect for that little thing.

I think i just saw your tire on a RECALL list.

Could be mistaken.

If you run 40 psi you might wear out the center of the tire a little more

How big of a deal is it to wear out the center more? What would happen?

Where is this list you saw my tire on?

When you run your pressure to high it wears out the center faster than the rest of the the tire because that is what is getting more contact with the road. The bad thing about that is your tires will wear our faster because there is less tread on the ground so unless you like buying tires all the time don't run them too high. The opposite is true for too low of a pressure setting you will wear out the outside of the tire faster to the same effect.

IMO tires last so long now that even if you only got 40,000 miles on them with the higher pressure, that's alot of expensive gas you saved. I buy generic tires too.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the info.

I checked my maximum tire pressure and it's 40 psi. I think I'll take out a few lbs this weekend just to be safe. The roads around here are in bad shape. Even though I don't drive like an idiot sometimes a pothole or large lump in the road will sneak up on me.
