I am trying to replace the starter on my 97 F150 (5.4L, automatic).
There are two bolts on the top of the starter that I cant get two. I cant get a wrench or socket on them from underneath the truck because they are on top so I figured I could remove the passenger tire and get them from the side but the exhaust is in the way. I have no idea how im supposed to remove these bolts.
Has anyone on here ever changed one these starters before and know how to remove those two top bolts?
You need a long extension for your socket wrench. I have a 6" and a 3" 1/4 inch drive extensions and 10 mm. socket that I put together. That will give you enough reach to get the bolts at the top of the starter. Use this setup to take off the bolt at the bottom first then use the same method for the top bolts and you'll see what I mean. All your doing is using the extension to clear the length of the starter to get the bolts from the front. This makes if very easy to remove and install your starter. Hope this helps.
