Build sheets?
I've been trying to nail down exaclty what my '78 F100 is (Ranger Explorer is that latest guess). Anyway, I keep coming accross people mentioning build sheets. Anyone care to shed some light on what a build sheet actually is, and how to go about getting one? Is this the thing I've been looking for that'll tell me EXACTLY what trim model and options my truck was "born" with?
I've decoded the VIN and the door tag, but neither tells me the complete story. Hopefully the build sheets do!

There is a post from Numberdummy advising of a company that has records from Ford. I was just at a local show and a 71 Lincoln had a sales report.
I'm going to do the same for my 69.

Assuming a PO hasn't removed it you may find the original in your cab, they can be above the headliner, under the carpet, behind the dash, between the springs and foam under or behind the seat, behind a door panel, etc.

Don't waste your money on Marti reports. I have a 73 Galaxie that I was trying to find that info on, so I wrote a letter directly to Ford. Within a month they wrote me back with all of the information that comes on the standard Marti report for free.
To answer the OP's question - the build sheet basically has all the specific items installed on the truck as it went down the assembly line and then when it's done, they stuff it under the seat. If they put it on the seat, it will probably be in pieces by now.

I've found them under the carpet and behind door panels on more then a few occasions so i'm not certain if there was a location they were meant to be or not but if you ever read "rivet head" by ben hamper you'd understand their unusual locations, the guys that assembled these trucks weren't exactly genious's but they had fun doing it.....

its very simple and FREE.......i got a sheet on both of my trucks, most car companies will do it, Dodge even emailed the stuff on my wifes Heep....go to Ford dot com, then find the "contact us" link and send them all the door tag and title info you have, along with your name, home address and personal contact info including email....they will send a confirmation email, and then you will get a buildsheet in the mail a couple weeks later.......
