223 timing question

O.K.
Went by the book. Have good spark. Had to replace resister wire. Was getting high voltage reading at coil on batt. side while I had dist. side grounded.
Have fuel thru carb. Plugs are wet. No start.
Check timing.
Dizzy hitting on #1 at TDC on comp. stroke. No start.
Check timing gears and chain.
When the two locate marks on gears are TWELVE link pins apart ??(according to book)
Should #1 be at TDC on the comp. stroke ??? (book doesn't say)
All I'm getting is a blast of flame out exhaust. Would make a great potato cannon.
Yes this is the first inline I ever messed with.
Think I'll put a two-stroke in it. Then I'll only have to think half as hard.

Never mind. Wrong spark plugs.
