Sounds like a bad in-tank pump.

I recently had the same problem on my 92' F-150 except it was my front tanks that had the problem. I ended up replacing the pump. At the time I lived in a place where parts could be hard to come by so I didn't fix the sending unit. I think that if you replace the pump in the tank, you will be fine, it is not that hard, the only special tool you will need is to disconect the fuel lines, and to get a set is like $10. If you don't want to fix the sending unit on the other tank you can just get an idea of how far you get on the opposite tank, then always start with the tank that doesn't give an accurate level. When that tank runs out you can switch tanks. That is what I did when I just moved across country.

First, can you hear the pump running? If not, are you still getting power to the pump?

Will the same thing happen idling at home?

How long do you have to let it set before you can start and drive away on the front tank again? I ask this because there may be a in tank sock type filter (I don't know if your truck does or not) that may be getting clogged until no more flow is present at which time the debris may fall off of the filter. That happened to me on a 76 AMC Gremlin and I got tired of fixing it and left the sock filter off. After that I of course had to change the carburator filter several times but that was easier to do.

had same type of problems, dropped tank, replaced tank due to rusted mounts for tank pump. new pump, new tank now runs fine.
