I now have a new tank and sending unit, but the gauge still won't go up past the 3/4 mark. Is it time for a new gauge and is it still sold anywhere. 69 F-250
Take the wire off the sending unit and ground it to the body. It should peg the gauge. If not, then likely something is wrong with gauge.
If you pull the sending unit out of tank, ground it back to the tank and move the sending unit arm to see if it makes full sweep. It might be outta adjustment and not reading full?
There is a small voltage regulator on the back of instrument panel. Maybe it's failing and has cut the voltage too low to allow full movement? It's a stretch, but if grounding the gauge doesn't peg it, then might be something else to check.
Well, then I guess you need to look into the voltage regulator that is mounted to the rear of the instrument panel. It's a small metal box (1/2" x 1") or so and it drops the voltage going to the guages so they read properly. Usually when they act up, they either quit(and no gauges work) or short out and peg everything.
I wonder if they replaced it somewhere along the line and put the wrong one in?
