Gasket sealants
There are so many types of gasket sealants out there now. What is a good general overall gasket sealant that I can use on paper gaskets (water pump, oil pan, etc)? I have been thinking of using permatex aviation.

I use Permatex Aviation sealer almost exclusively. No other sealer is allowed near my motorcycles. It's also a good thread sealer. It doesn't fill largish voids like the corners of oil pan gaskets and such, for that I use RTV. I like Permatex "Ultra gray" particularly. If you want to spend the money "Right Stuff" is probably the best RTV there is. RTV is THE ticket to use instead of end seals on V8 intakes. Other than particular spots like those I try to use as little RTV as possible though. I've come across more than one engine that died of lack of oil pressure only to find upon teardown a bunch if silicone "strings" hanging in the oil strainer.
