Is this A good trade?

I can trade my 2004 F250 6.0 for A 2008 F450 6.4 and come out with enough cash to buy A ranger truck to drive to work and back. And use the 450 just to pull toy box, which only weighs 7000 pounds. Is the 450 an over kill? it has 4:88 gears.

i would do exacyly that.thats what i do, i have my f450 to tow with and i have a f150 to drive to work and back.

i would look for another f350 or f450 with 4:30s or somethin becauce towing 7k with 4:88s is realy overkill.

good luck on what you buy.your gona love the 6.4

4.88's is overkill for 7,000 lbs. I've towed over 23,000 with my F-350 with 3.73's with no trouble at all, and was getting the same mileage as an empty F-450 w/4.88's.

The 6.0 has over 100,000 miles on it runs great, is the 6.4 having less problems than the 6.0?

Yes, so far the 6.4 has a better rep than the 6.0 did at this point in its life.
Yes again. 4.88s are for pulling mountains out of the way and your mileage will be in the crapper. Must be a Job 1 or 2 truck; I believe Ford quit the 4.88 option for Job 3 trucks. In fact they're even offering 3.55s now (in 250/350).
Just curious, what are you getting for trade-in for the 04?

What kind of mileage should I get with 450 pulling 7000 pounds at 65 MPH?

probably around 10 if that.cauce mine with the 4;30S towing 10k gets about 10 to 11.

as for the 6.4.the engine has had a few early bugs but other than that the engine has a very good rep for reliability.

That's not bad my 2004 6.0 only gets 11 to 12 MPG pulling trailer. Anybody know what it cost to regear A F450 front and rear?

It'll cost about $4500-$5000. Expensive, complicated and likely not worth it. Could do a swap with a crashed one from a yard, would be cheaper if you're in to taking risks/ good with a spanner

I agree with SouthTexasDiesel. I've towed 13k with mine and no problems at all. If you can afford to put the fuel in it, and it's really want you want, then get it. Just remember, fuel isn't going to get any cheaper!
