To make a long story short....i took my truck to the dealer last Monday the 21st because the truck was surging at around 35 to 40 mph and the boost was dropping to 0 when driven at a constant speed. And as of today i was told that the truck had to be re flashed because they were having a problem with the EGR valve opening and closing on it's own which they are attributing the surging to. No codes were found and nothing when data logged.
and just an fyi...they drove the truck for 4 days and could not get the problem to reoccur. When i went in and took a tech for a ride i was able to have the problem occur within about 10 min.
So the real question is...is it possible for EGR to just run on it's own and then be fixed by flashing the computer and can the EGR cause the idle to surge and boost to drop to 0?

I don't know about the other questions, but an egr problem can lead to very low to no boost. I would actually just go ahead and weld the egr shut and block it off and be done with it. EGR system is a problematic sytem on the 6.0 and it's just best to bypass it. I would actually think it would be best to get rid of it even if all your running is a tuner, but then again it doesn't plague some trucks like it does others.
i was having this problem weather i was running a tune or not. and the old tune i was running was one of matt's where the egr was set to off... so that's why i'm thinking that it's not the egr cause it was doing it tuned and stock.

What are your EGTs running(if applicable)? It might be there is a possible exhaust leak as that would really put a damper on boost. As to the egr tuning turned off, there is a slight chance that it would still run(a few people that Bean has talked to said the egr was still running despite tuning).
EGT's are around 700 at that speed and i've experienced a shutter every now and then but not with the tech. They are going to drive it today and give it back if they can't get the issue to surface again after the re flash. I guess i'll see..... cause the problem occurred every time i drove the truck for 3 weeks prior to taking it in.
That doesn't sound like egr right there unless your temps normally round that speed are 400 or so. When you have a problem round the up-pipes the truck is going to seem like it's struggling for power and your EGTs(for highway driving) will be around 1200 or so, around 3k on the tach, powering black smoke, and your going 40 miles an hour with a little hill to crest.
well, i picked the truck up today. the bill came to $ 179.00. $ 40.00 for fuel and the rest was diagnostic. According to the service manager, the truck was reflashed to correct the EGR issue. According to the paperwork the service writer handed me... the tech was unable to find anything wrong with the truck and did nothing but put close to 100 miles on it test driving it.
by now your saying to yourself what did he pay for....someone to waste his fuel and give the truck back after having it for 11 days..that's all i'm seeing
And when i was first given the truck back there was a yellow post-it on the paperwork that said $ 40 for fuel and $ 100 deductible. SO what happened to that price i don't know but i'm sure the truck will be back to the dealership soon. WTF
