I bought this truck in May, 01 Ranger Edge, 2wd 4.0 Auto and it has worked out pretty well so far. I'm getting around 20MPG in mixed driving and have the utility of the bed, something my Mustang GT didn't have. Anyway, I have started to notice that the tach will stick or hang up. I haven't been able to find a common cause, it seems random. I have seen it jump to to about 4K, with no discernable change in the engine rpm and stay there. If it tap the lens on the dash, it will come back and register correctly.
Do I need to clean the tach driver connection or somehow lube the gauge itself? This has become somewhat annoying and I would like to get this fixed.
Thanks in advance.
Well I've never had a Tach stick, but once had a Speed-o act out & get jumpy, noisey, stick & didn't want to return to zero mph, so I pulled the instrument cluster, cleaned it & lubed the speedo gauge shaft with MarvelOil, end of problem.
I think something lighter in weight, like Clock Oil, or maybe clean Tranny Fluid would likely be better for a electronic instrument & both the clock oil & tranny fluid should be ok around any plastic or metal parts.
The MarvelOil may be ok, but it may be kinda on the viscous side for electronic instruments.
By all means check the electrical connections & if corrosion is found, clean with a plastic safe electrical contact cleaner like CRC QD, ect & a Foam (not cotton) swab.
