hey all, i just wanted to post this to get some insight..... i picked up my paperwork from my dealer that just performed the brake hose recall on my truck. it stated that they needed to remove the lift kits crossmember to do this job, and it had an authorization quote number listed.... i have the 6" rcd lift. but, does this make any sense? just wanted to post this here before i ask the dealer about it. thanks....
yeah.... i thought the same thing.... im going to call them out on it, and then tell them that i want my alignment re-checked if they did in fact remove the crossmember...... doesnt make any sense to me.
My guess the cross memeber they want to remove is the one under the engine. The 6'' spaced cross member from a lift kit gets in the way of driveshaft removal. The techs have found it is faster to remove the front driveshaft and replace the hose from underneath the truck.
there is NO WAY that it would be easier or faster to do this job by removing the crossmember.... since this would require removing the front diff skid plate, front sway bay and drop brackets, and then the actual crossmember..... i couldnt see any indexing markings on the alignment cam bolts either, so it just all sounds real fishy. if the crossmember needs to be removed, then i would think that the alignment would have to be rechecked since there is no guarantee your getting it all reinstalled into the exact positioning as it came out...... plus as i mentioned in a post last week, i looked under the hood and didnt see any brand new hoses... but maybe this dealer installs hoses already coated with engine compartment dirt/grime so it all matches.
No you can't see it from the top, heck, you can't even see it from the bottom really! I do them from the top however seems easier and I don't have to burn all the skin off my hands and arm. Just a few cuss words along with the job, and you do have to do everything by feel. If you do it by the recall, you have to do it from the bottom and remove the driveshaft.
thanks for the input guys.... i called the dealer, and asked him about it.... i guess the serivce guy wrote it up as the crossmember, but it was actually the tranny cross member, not the control arm crossmember.... so that makes sense now.
