i found my problem with misalignment on my passenger side rear tire,in case u guys dont remember i have been searching for the cause of my tire and wheel to turn out slightly,, i took my bed off today and noticed the front leaf spring hanger if warped up,this has gotta be the problem because the one on my parts truck is alot straighter ,its nice to have parts truck laying around u never know what u might need,
can anyone tell me the best way too remove the big rivets that hold the hanger on??? Also i suppose i need grade 8 bolts to replace them with right??
i have used a grinder to knock off the heads of the rivets ,i cant seem to knock them threw im having problems is there any other way besides a air hammer because i dont have one???
i was sitting here thinking .Do i need to remove the rivet heads on both sides reason i ask is i only removed rivet heads on the front side ,i didnt really know if the inside frame side needed cut off ,also hard to cut them with side grinder, just wondering if that would make removal easier thanx for your help 1985 FORD F-150
Grind the rivet head flat, enough to center punch it, then drill(up to 3/8") in approx. where you think you are around half way through the rivet hole in the frame. Don't drill all the way through!
Take a good punch/hammer and smash it, it should pop the rest of the rivet out, np.
This is called "relieving" the rivet.
The rivet head, or heads do not hold all the load-the part of the rivet in the hole is expanded too-hence the drilling for relief.
No problem pipman thats just the way I was taught how to do it and we use a big hammer and whack on it till it pops out. Ive never heard of doin it that way before drillin into it to relieve the pressure.
I had a heck of a time getting mine out. I ended up grinding off both sides and just beating and beating on them- I used a air hammer half of the time and a hammer and punch the other half. After about a hour and a really sore hand from where i repeatedley hit it, I got them out.
So if all else fails, just beat the crap out of them
I CAREFULLY torched the heads off of mine so that they were flush with the bracket and punched the rest out with an air hammer. I'm used to rivets, deal with them on a daily basis at work.
i finally got them out today ,i ground the heads off and unbolted the leaf srping and took a nd big chisle and pecked on the hanger until it fell off and then i used a ratchet extension and hammer and hammered the rivets out
