So today after finding out my truck was worth nothing to trade, i decided i will keep my 06 and get the extended warrenty. Does anyone have any info on which would be the best option to use ?
I have the flyers from ford on their extracare and premiumcare plans. It looks like about 2700.00 to be protected up to 75k and 7 years. Does tha sound about right ?
with the extended warranties make sure it is through Ford and not a aftermarket junk that dealerships like to push where they make more money off it.
as for 2700 seems high but the vehicles i had a price off of was a sport trac and a fusion and they were no higher than 1600 for those. so i dont know about a superduty/diesel
I bought one for 7/years/75k/miles. My truck is also an '06 and I bought the warranty over a year ago. I forget the exact price but it was more than $3k for the Premium Care policy. I did not shop at all, just told the dealer what I wanted.
Don't buy anything except the Ford ESP - no third party warranties.
You can compare coverages versus price to select a plan that fits your needs. But you can probably beat their quoted price by shopping several dealers. Dealers will often sell the warranty at less than full price.
Nothing but ford warrenties..Thanks for the advice, that is what one of the dealers also told me, they said some of the others are a real pain.
Thanks again
I owned a 3rd party warranty on one car some years ago. Fortunately the company did not disappear or fail, which is one of the big risks. They even paid a claim on a repair. But even that was a bad experience. The repair shop had to disassembly my car to diagnose the problem. Then they had to get on the phone BEFORE they could do any work and see if it was covered and how much they would pay. Lets just say that the warranty company had no incentive to reply in a timely fashion. Meanwhile, my repair tech had to move to another job while waiting for the authorization, then go back to the job several days later.
A Ford warranty would have been a no questions asked repair.
So I conclude that even when 3rd party warranties do pay the bill, they are not a good value.
Just make sure you shop around. Different Ford dealers sell the same ESP warranty at different prices. Maybe even check with some of our sponsors and see who has the best deal.
I work with aftermarket warrAnties everyday, and can honsetly say Id rather get kicked in the jimmy then deal with them. They never want to cover anything, they rearely will pay your full labor rate, want wholesale on parts, wont pay diagnostic time etc etc. We make ALL customers with an ESP sign a waiver stating that THEY are liable for ALL charges that the ESP company wont cover. 99.99% of the time the customer ends up paying a large amount and is pissed. With a factory warrAnty you get the labor op, call an automated hotline, and its covered or its not, simple as that. Buy wisely.
My sister had a 3rd party warranty for an Expedition. She was pulling a 5000 lb trailer up a mountain pass and blew a head gasket.
To make a long story short, the warranty claim was refused, they said she overheated the engine before the gasket blew (she didn't) and she was out over $3000 for repairs.
I also purchased the extended warranty from ford when I bought my used truck from them. It was used for repairs several times, however, you should know that the warranty you buy will start at the day the truck was purchased new. Meaning that if your truck is a 2006 and you are buying the warranty now you will loose 2 years off the number of years that the extended warranty is for. they didnt tell me that when I bought mine from ford. Ask them when you go to buy it.
i would up the coverage to 100k instead of 75k--that way yer esp is commensurate with yer smoker warranty
I agree with that. I bought 75k based on my driving the previous few years. But we travel in the SD so much more that I should have bought 100k. I think I can add on to it when the time comes. But everyones driving habits will differ of course.
As another poster noted, it's important to know that Ford extended warranty time and mileage periods ALWAYS are from the in service date, not added on top of the standard warranty. So 75k means 75k. It does NOT mean 36k+75k. Same thing with the time period.
I have a contract through CNA National Warranty Corporation. I am very please with the service and coverage. I purchased it with my truck when it was new . They are more professional than the local Ford dealer who can't seem to remember to call for coverage on a repair item.
Even the Ford ESP plan isn't worth much unless you have a dealer willing to go to bat for you in the event of a serious problem. Some Ford ESP genius wanted the dealer to rebuild my modular V6 in my previous truck (99, F150 with 50k miles). The truck had a nearly flat cam, collapsed lifters, spun bearings, blown head gaskets (Suspected) and a few other problems. It was so bad inside the engine the dealer couldn't figure out why the thing was still running. It took the dealer a week after tearing into the old one to convince the Ford ESP plan people that the engine was beyond a simple rebuild and they had to make a special trip to inspect my torndown engine to approve replacement with a new/remaned unit.
As a foot note, I traded it in 5,000 miles later when the tranny started slipping, the power windows and door locks all needed replaced for a second time, the brakes were worn out and tires ready to be replaced. Probably didn't help that I would drive home from Lowes/Home Depot with the front end floating a couple of times a month.
