Hey guys, I know all about the different quality of various fuels and what not, but recently I've changed my spark plugs and get worse spark knock on certain fuels than I have in the past, anybody on here experienced the same thing?
Also, I know the problem is corrected using a quality gasoline, but every now and then I'm out of gas and there is only a Speedway nearby (one of the worst gasses I know of). Will the spark knock over time actually hurt my engine?
Lastly, anyone know of any fuels other than Shell and Amoco (BP) in MI that are good?
Pre-detonation can have a number of causes. Too much heat is the typical, from either a carbon build up in the head (causing some insulation and adding to the compression (air heats as it's compressed)) or the plugs are holding too much heat (wrong heat range.)
There are probably more causes, but these are the two I am familiar with. Since it got worse after the plug change, I would assume the plugs were the wrong heat range. You may want to try a can of seafoam through the brake boost vacuum hose, or using an octane booster with the cheaper fuels.
