First off, any of you guys that have timed your engines- how do you loosen the two bottom nuts where the IP bolts to the gear cover? The bottom driver's side nut is in just such a position that you can't get any sort of a wrench on it at all, unless maybe if you took a box end and ground it down thinner. The open end won't fit at all. I haven't even tried getting at the one on the passenger side. blah.
Second- if I have the truck in 5th gear and floor it, and run it up a bit, I notice a rubber burning smell immediately afterward (it's definitely not burning clutch, I know that smell). I'm wondering if the serpentine belt is slipping on the crank pulley when I do that and creating the smell. It doesn't make any weird noise. Just seems odd. Any ideas?
I used a box end wrench to get to both the bottom bolts.
The wrench I used is rather short.
Another thing you can do is heat a wrench and put a bend in it close to the head to make it easier.
As for the rubber smell, just showing up in fifth gear is a bit funny.
One thing to look at is the exhaust system, the pipes will be getting hotter from the EGT's faster and higher with the truck in high gear than it will in lower gears.
Any rubber or plastic close to the pipes may be getting hot enough to smell.
I think I would look at engine temp, possibly the fan clutch is starting to lock up and put more load on the belt.
I had the fan belt listed first, but after thinking about it I moved it down since you do not hear any noise.
I may have to buy a cheap wrench and try some stuff with it.
As the bolt is sitting now, I was able to get the open end of a stubby wrench on the nut, but with it like that the wrench was sitting right on top of a bolt on the intake manifold so you couldn't move it anywhere. You can't get the open end on the nut any other way because the wrench just plain won't fit or hits the IP body.
As for the exhaust...I did check it, but I don't really see anything that would smell like burning rubber aside from the exhaust hangers. Might have to look again. I'm really thinking it's the belt, I'm guessing there's just too much load on it.
I ground a box end thinner, heated and bent it so it would fit and turn easy. There are thin wrenches you can buy. I just have extras that I have bent, shortened, shaved, ect. over the years to make jobs easier.
I started to play with my timing and found the same problem. so i went to MAC TOOLS and ordered a 9\16 double open end wrench with a 60 degree and 15degree angles. (i think tats wat they were??) But anyways it works awesome. Yes it does cost more but i like having it in my tool box.
greetings .. its been a while since i've been around.
I remember having that problem with the wrench fitting on the two bottom mounting bolts on the pump flange. I ground down a 9/16 wrench and when I wanted to get to those bolts i removed the two bolts that were near those nuts that hold the gear cover. That didnt seem to bother any sealing effects on the gear cover and gave me lots of room for moving the wrench.
