Just changed my fuel filter on my '05 F-150 SC Lariat with 35k miles. Used the post by Superrangerman2002 as a guideline (was an excellent post, thank you). Anyway, now my check engine light is on. Could it be that i have a bad sensor? Truck runs fine. Anybody else have this issue?
That is correct. I followed the directions by tripping the fuel reset switch, running the truck out of gas, replacing the filter and then starting truck. I know that in the Chevy's, a loose gas gap can make the cel come on so i am wondering if this is the same problem.
Yes, a lose/broken gas cap and cause a CEL light, so can a lot of other things. Take it to autozone, they can usually scan the code for free and tell you what the code means. If it doesn't seem to have any kind of problem other than the CEL is on, you can disconnect the battery and then turn on your headlights to completely drain the PCM and then reconnect the battery, this will reset the CEL, if it comes back on, definetly get it scanned.
I never do that, so maybe that had something to do with it. I simply relieve the pressure at the fuel rail, grab a clean coffee can, and pop the clips. Strain the fuel (usually about a cup) back into my lawnmower can, and that's it. Might be a short in the switch, or something. Go to (I HATE saying it) auto Zone and have them pull a code for you. Probably P0440, or some other evap leak code. Let us know what you find!!

dammit...you beat me...I hate typing the words "Auto Zone"
I will have to check with "the zone" tomorrow as i am on a 24 hour work shift. The last time i took my wifes Impala there, they said that they no longer do a diagnosis. A will have to make a few phone calls.
FatalErrorz, I do not see where it helped me to go through all those steps either. I still had plenty of gas that sprayed out of the lines.
triton_2002, thanks for the info. My next question was to ask if it would be safe to disconnect the battery to reset the CEL as i have done in previous vehicles. I did not know about turning on the headlights though, thanks.

Why wouldn't it be safe? It will just reset the computer and any CEL codes that are stored. If you have an issue the CEL will appear again and you can take it from there. The PCM will "relearn" your particular driving habits shortly (although I can never feel any differences when the PCM is reset). Turning on the headlights after you disconnect the battery just drains any power retained by the PCM, or you can just disconnect the battery for about 30 min. ... same thing.
I changed the fuel filter on my '04 Mustang GT a few months back using the un-pluging the fuel pump inertia switch method, and my CEL went on also. I removed the neg. bat. cable for a few moments and re-attached it w/ no change. I ran it that way for about a day and the CEL went out on it's own. I asked a mechanic buddy about what happened, and he said that the ecm may have detected a lean condition or a miss-fire and threw a code. Sounds plausable. Have it scanned or drive it for awhile, and if it is like my Stang, it could go out on it's own. Just my opinion.
I tend to agree with you efx4. I have been driving it for two days with no change on the cel. Truck has been running fine. Think i will disconnect the battery tomorrow and see what happens from there. Will cross my fingers as we are leaving Thursday morning for a camping trip that is 6 hours away
