For a while now I've been noticing my 98 ranger 3.0L , stock drive train, has a cl- clunk when stepping on the gas pedel. I am sure that it is not the U- Joint(s). Today I lifted up the rear end so that both wheels are equaly raised off the ground. Then I grabbed the passenger side rear wheel a gave it a spin. The result was a fair amount of play in the rear end. Now by "play" I mean this: The wheel spun about 4 inches before it engaged into the differential. I hear an almost grinding type sound when it does "lock in". The other wheel eventually rotates in the normal fashion. ( counter clockwise since the rotated side was spun clockwise)
Also the drive shaft doesn't rotate when the raised up wheels are spun.(also normal) However, the amount of play in the rear diff is not good(in my opinion) when spinning the drive shaft manually , the diff can be heard and seen engaging late. Again, a few inches late.
So...What to do? Where to start? Diagnosis any one !??
I have a 99 Ford ranger that did the exact same thing and my axle recently flew out of the rear end at 30+ MPH. It cost upwards of $700 to replace with a salvaged rear end. For concerns of cost and safety i would shut that truck down now. (My wheel turned into a lawn dart!)

sure ...I'll shut her down....I need to be picked up at 5:15am and driven from here to Boston(about 40miles) then at lunch time, we are going to the shop (15miles from job site) for materials. Then On the way home we need to stop in at the super market....well...you get the idea....thanks for your concern though. Sorry that happened to ya.
