My driver's side door lock is not working properly. If I push the driver's switch to the lock position both the driver's and passenger side locks lock. If I push it to the unlock position nothing happens or I hear a whirring noise from the door. Both locks operate normally if I use the passenger's switch. Is it most likely the actuator or the switch that is bad? Is there an easy way to rule out one or the other? The dealership wants to sell me an actuator for $80.
Most likely the switch or wiring. Here is how to test your lock motor.
Remove the harness from the lock motor.
Make two test leads about 15 feet long, one red, one black. Clip on one end, probe on the other. Install 15 amp ATO fuses in the middles. Connect them directly to the battery and then to the harness leading to the lock motor. Put the negative in first, then the positive
Reverse them in the harness for lock/unlock functions. You will get some sparks, that is okay.
If the lock functions, then start looking at the switches. Your truck is not that old, I would look at dirt or a loose wire before replacing the switch.
If your door locks (both sides) lock and unlock properly from the pasenger side then your door lock actuators are ok. The door lock switches on my 93 are interchangeable. You may want to change them from right to left and see if the problem changes so that the door lock will work properly from the drivers side switch. The switches are only about $10 to $15 a piece.
I just recently replaced the power window switch for the driver's window so having to replace the power lock switch wouldn't surprise me. I will test the wiring and actuator before getting the new switch. Thanks.
Also I tried switching the driver's and passenger's side switches but they aren't interchangable. They have the same pins but a different key for how they fit into place.
