I was pulling out of the storei n my 1990 f250 and the engine started knocking. I pushed the clutch in to coast it to the side of the road and the engine locked. I then went to restart and it is locked up. Checked the engine oil and it is 2x what it should be. it is not water this I can tell as is not milky. So what can it be????
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?
I have a 6.9 that I can install. Will this fit with out to much trouble?
Sounds like the seals went out in your ip and filled the crankcase full of fuel. Smell the see if it smells like diesel. See if the oil is thinner than normal.
More info
I just back rotated it a bit to see if it would turn. it turn about 1/2 to 3/4 a turn then locked again. When I rotated it sounded like something fell in the pan.
The oil I am going to drain in a bit to see what is wrong as it was about 1/2 qhart low 2 days ago.
just dumped the oil in a 5 gallon bucket and was going to filter it to see if there was metal in it. what came out was about 2 gallons of coolant I checked the oil yesterday or the day before and it was good. I think i have broke the bllock to water jacket?
The 6.9 will fit with no trouble, the only difference is the wires and the best way I have found to solve that is when you get both out transplant all the electrical stuff, glow plugs, wiring harness and all that onto the 6.9, and then it will work.
With a good helper and a good hoist, you are looking at about a 14 or 15 hour job to swap engines.
What year is the 6.9 engine?
Need to get a hoist but I have a son to help.
The 6.9 is a 83-84 but has a rebuild sticker from ford on it. The 6.9 is in pieses the trans adapter is off of it and the pan gasket neet to be replaced. The 6.9 has a single mass flywheel the 7.3 I am taking out is a dual mass flywheel. Is this going to be a problem??
If the dual mass is in good shape you can use it on the 6.9.
The best choice for a hoist would be one tied to something solid and substantial as in chain fall hoist, not an engine hoist on wheels.
Remember you will be twisting and turning the engine, which is going to be in the 1200 pound category as you install it.
Portable engine hoists get rather hairy when you have the engine high enough for the oil pan to clear the radiator support.
For what is is worth, if I have to use a portable hoist, the radiator shell comes off the truck.
That keeps the engine about 30" lower than going in the top requires.

Yes I am in cold country
This a 84 and has has stickers on it that say ford rebuilt
as of yet I have no way of lifting it. I has to have a friend come in to lift it the last time with a backhoe.
The problem is that it is missing a few pieces. the tower and gear that the IP hook to are missing what mainly have is a long block.
