New here and a problem

So, I jsut bought a 1986 F150. 4spd manual with straight 6. Ran fine for the first 5 days that i owned it, but tonight, when i started it, when idling in neutral or with the clutch depressed, it keeps kind of falling over rather than running, and if left long enough, will stall out. ???? I am confused. I am not a mechanic guru or anything, but I opened up the carb and pulled a leaf out, etc. But, no change. Help me fordtrucks.com...you're my only hope.

What is it's history? If it has been sitting around for awhile, you probably have dirt and water in the fuel. Also check all the vacuum lines and hoses. Since it's a later model six, you probably have a computer unless someone has tore it out. If you have the EECIV computer, you could pull some codes. Do you have a vacuum line running to the distributor, and wires going to the carb?

had been driven little in the last few months, but drove fine from monday until after work today. i think there are wires to the carb, and a vacuum line to the distributor, but i will have to double check. it was getting dark when i was looking at it tonight. i don;t remember seeing a computer anywhere. i did fill it up wednesday night for the first time, and i put 87 octane fuel in it...??? I will probably just drop it off somewhere on saturday after golfing and see what they say. i had some friends say check the fuel filter and the vacuum hoses. like i said, i am no guru, but if it sounds like it's not getting enough gas and is stalling out, but the problem goes away when i give it gas, i would think it's an air or gas issue. of course, if i knew, i wouldn't be asking these questions.

I'd say you have a fuel problem. Rust is the tank clogging the filter maybe.

The fuel should not be a problem, (unless you got a bad tank of gas) all Ford truck engines from that era were designed to run on 87 octane gas. And before you just drop it off at a shop try to make sure it it a reputable place, it seems that for every honest mechanic out there two crooks are drooling for business. But once you find a good, honest mechanic he is worth his weight in gold!

Check the distributor for a vacuum line. If no vacuum line, then you do have a computer running the engine.
