Backspacing
Just another way to express where the hub is positioned in the wheel. 3 1/2 backspacing means that's the distance from the back of the hub to the inside edge of the wheel, which means on a 10 inch wheel, the other 6 1/2 is to the outside edge, and the offset is (half of 6 1/2 less 3 1/2) one and a half inches.
Very important if you're putting wider wheels on your truck - need to keep the backspacing pretty close to the stock wheel backspacing, or things start to rub.

Since you are looking at 16s....I'm guessing you have a 99-04 truck. Ideally you'd like to stick around 4.5" of backspacing.
With 3.5" they will stick out pretty far and place more stress on front end components.
