1987 f-150 roller or not

how can you tell if I have a roller or not without tearing into it

If the motor is original it's not a roller motor. You can verify by removing a valve cover and one of the rocker arms, and pull out the pushrod. If it measures about 6.25" you have a roller motor, if it's 6.75" long you have a flat tappet motor. With a roller you can also see the dogbones around the lifter by looking down the pushrod hole.
