Recently I purchased a replacement stabilizer. The boot for the new unit shredded on the stock inner bracket and u-bolts (on drag-link). So I replaced the new unit with a ,"mounting kit"/stabilizer from the same manufacture. Only to find that, there inner mount, while making room for full compression of the shock (using 1/8" smaller u-bolts, 1/8"dropped mounting hole, and 1/2" spacer between the bracket and shock eyelet) still leaves no room to accommodate a fully compressed shock boot (1/2" deep bellows) .
So, can the drag-link bracket be moved 2 or so inches out from the stock indented mounting positions on the drag-link? By doing this, the boot would no longer have to compress down over the shock body 2"s.The boots inside diameter is to small to do this freely anyway. How about aftermarket duel stabilizer kits, the middle mount must secure in a non-stock location?
Mine is a little torn up, but before moving the shock outward and effecting it's geometry, I would try a quality boot. Cheap rubber and vinyl will abrade pretty easily. A nice poly or good rubber will take more abuse, and can be picked up for $2-5 each. ProComp and Energy Suspension have some nice ones, I am sure there are others too.
Then you might want to take a file to any rough edges, give it a chamfer so the boot is only pinched and not cut up.
Thanks for the support REAX. I rounded the back leading edge of the stock drag-link bracket before succumbing to the need of the skyjacker drag-link bracket. There shock is about 2"s longer than stock and had interface problems with the stock bracket( it hit my bracket and one retaining u-bolt). So I got there drag-link stuff and measured allot.
I found that although the new bracket makes good on the shock fitting, It still compresses the shock to far. Not beyond specs for the shock, but for the boot. The boot I have is urethane custom blue and should be a good boot but I hope not to be removing it for a few tears in the near future.
I went to summit racing and looked up a duel in-line stabilizer kit ( skyjacker )for my rig. On the site you are able to look at pictures of most parts, and I lucked out that they indeed had a photo of the kit, and at the bottom of the page they have a link to the installation instructions. In the instructions they show the center bracket mounting pretty clear. The mount utilizes one indention position of the stock bracket and two other positions without stock indentions (more inboard). My setup will utilize only one shock but needs the mount moved 2" more inboard. As if the shock was already extended that 2 inches. This will accommodate the boots compression and with luck only mean that the shock no longer has to compress as far. I still need to check the new shocks full extension spec. but it looks as if the drag-link bracket, mounting u-bolts can be used off of the stock locations as long as they are 1.5" diameter units. I'll check the full extension needs and hopefully have a fix.
As far as geometry goes, I'll be careful. The stock unit has the drag-link bracket mounted to the front of the shaft, and the after market unit mounts to the back and comes with a spacer bolt that moves the shock eyelet back even further, so hopefully my moving the stock mount down the drag-link a few inches doesn't cause its terminus angle to get in the way.
Yep, Your right. I checked the specs on there unit and no go. It misses the 2" relocate by 1.6" or so (won't extend long enough). Its starting to look like a 70$ lesson. I really would like to keep the stock drag-link bracket(uses thicker bolts and is contoured to fit). I list in another thread the problems with that combo, but in short the shock body hits the u-bolt on left and makes contact with the bracket. Ever so slight but (1/8") contact no less.
I may try using there bracket with no boot. A stepped boot of sorts might compress over the body if I can find one that list dimensions.
