Got started installing the U/D Pullies Sunday evening, nowhere in the instructions did it say you need a special tool set to remove the Mechanical fan! I put it all back together and am going to wait for the Electric Fan's to get here and install it all at once next weekend hopefully !

You do realize the potential problems you can have with both electric fans and underdrive pulleys?

U/D pulleys decrease the alternator output and eFans require more from the electrical system and therefore the alternator. Your cooling ability could be compromised and/or you could fry the alternator. Even more so if you're running an aftermarket stereo with external amp.

I know a guy on another forum who will fight you to the death about this subject. he claims that the PCM knows what the battery voltage is at all times and adjust alt output to ensure it is charged and current demands met.

I've always thought the alt provided current based on RPM. and the lower the RPM, the lower current provided.

Those U/D pulleys scare me off. I've also heard of people bumping the idle RPM up 100 rpm to offset the slower alt speed after U/D pulley install

anybody? I like the thought of e-fans to free up a few ponies and quicker revs

I was told to up the Idle speed to compensate, fans are only pulling 28 Amps when they are BOTH running.

the Troyer U/D pulleys are sold as a kit and there is no mention about bumping idle up on his website.

curious about all the fuss I've heard I got to looking. I e-mailed Troyer about this and was told that no PCM adjustment was required. then I did some researching in past threads and Troyer himself said in an old thread that idle adjustments will be required to ensure good Alt performance.

what gives? I'm still inclined to believe these body styles are like the old trucks. A PCM controlled alt would just cost more $$$ to use...especially when a time tested system already exists for fairly cheap. and it's weird that I find the issue split about in 1/2 about idle speed adjustment needed with U/D pulleys

oh yeah, words of caution. Do not use the e-fan setups that have you zip tie the fan to your radiator. I've seen too many horror story threads about this. The zip ties pull through the radiator fins and ruin the radiator. You'll need to custom mount the e-fan body to prevent damage

The Flex A Lite 270 Fans mount with brackets to the radiator supports. I ran U/D pullies on my 07 Mustang GT with no issues at all, with those and a CAI and program I gained 1 1/2 MPG !

Alternator output isn't purely based on RPM. An alternator spinning at 1000 RPM can be pulling very little load if nothing is turned on and the system isn't charging. Turn things on and it starts putting a load on the system load. The lower the RPM the less able the alternator is to pull the needed load.

Wink

I had 87 Mustang GT and it had set u/d pulleys on it and very time the motor would idle the lights would dim down and volt gauge would go down. Alt. amps output will increase when the engine rpm's go up. Check with volt machine and one with amps on it and watch what happens. I installed throttle spacer on my 05 F-150 CC 5.4L engine and increased the mpg's about 1 to 1.5 mpg's better. Was getting 13 to 13.5 to 14 to 14.5 mpg's city and highway driving and keeping rpm's under 2000rpm's. it's called HELIX made buy Street and Performance Electronices. Google and check it out. I bought it on Amazon.com.

If you are having problems with the alternator not putting out as much juice at idle, would installing a higher output alternator solve this?
