I just built me a trailer out of my wrecker 86 F-150. I am finished with everything besides brake lights. I have four wires and i tested them out with a battery to see what does what but then i hooked them up to my trailer harness. and hooked them up to the truck. I have running lights fine. When i hit the brake i lose all my lights. When i turn a blinker on they both flash. Where did i go wrong.
p.s. i didnt have the groung hooked up to my truck yet would the be the problem i don't think thats it because i have running lights
I would say it's a poor ground. I bet that if you propperly ground both the truck and the trailer sides of the plug, you will have working lights. Usually with a poor ground the park lights will work but when a turn signal is used, the poor ground cannot support the current and voltage bleeds to other circuits or just flashes everything.
I don't know the colors for the wires but what you should have is this.
1. A wire for left turn.
2. A wire for right turn.
3. A wire for running lights/tail lights.
4. A ground wire.
Notice that I didn't mention a brake light wire. That's because there isn't one. Your left and right turn lights are your brake lights. Trying to get your brake lights working first is the wrong way to hook up a trailer. Get your running, left and right turn lights working and your brake light will just fall into place.
