428cj heads

i have a chance to get a set of 428cj heads. they were re-built in the early 1980's, but they were not built with stainless steel valves or hardened seats.

they have been stored since the rebuild. the guy might be asking about $400. and possibly about $125-$200 for a blue thunder intake brand new still in the box.

the question i have is will these heads bolt up to my 390 block. i do realize i have to change the exhaust, not a problem since im planning on getting new headers for the truck anyway.

the truck will be a 1967 f-250.

will these heads be worth my time effort and hard earned money????

Yep and yep. If the head casting number is C8OE-6090-N they are TRUE CJ heads. $400 is pretty cheap for CJ heads so just be sure of what your getting. The heads casting number will tell you the story.

thank you for the response.

the guy im getting the heads from, he was going to use them for his mustang gt, but he went a different way with the motor for it. he decided to put a 427(ford) in it instead.he dosent care for the fe motors/engines that much.

the heads still has the exhaust manifold on them, so he would know himself which heads were the 428 set.

Really?

There are SIX different 428 heads. Only two are 428 SCJ's. NINE different 428 exhaust manifolds, only THREE of them are for the 428 SCJ.

When you come up with the correct casting numbers from those "428 SCJ" heads (posted by FFR428)....then and only then, will you know if they're the real deal....or not.

Anyone wanna bet the head casting number's prefix is: C6AE, C7AE, or C8AE?

Your right Bill!!! If I had a dollar for every set of 428CJ heads that were "supposed to be..." I'd be a rich man right now. And I'd have quite a few sets of CJ/SCJ head besides. I do hope for the original poster they really are as that's one heckuva deal!! The seller also may be confused and is really selling a set of 429CJ heads since he's not a fan of the FE. Guess we'll wait and see what comes up??

Don't forget the C80E-6090-H are the early 68 428cj heads. There is no difference between the N and H head. They are the same. If his heads are true cj heads, and if the exhaust manifolds are original cj manifolds, then just the manifolds themselves are worth the $400.
I sold some stock early 427 exhaust manifolds and also a set of stock 428cj exhaust manifolds for more than that.

Hmmmm Looks like there were more than two.
One of our 428's is a 1970 428SCJ. The heads on it are
C80E-6090-N

Those are the actual Ford part numbers I typed for the heads, not engineering/casting numbers.

The original part number was C8OZ-6049-F....Ford later replaced the C8OZ-F head with C8OZ-6049-K.

Now y'all know it is entirely possible to put a Windsor block out to 427 these days so that might could be explanation here. Might. Could.

Ok,, then the part number F is the casting number H
and the part number K is the casting number N.

Sounds good to me.

WOW.

thanks all for the resposes.

the guy favors non fe engines for his fords. all his fords are bb motors except for the 1967 shelby, that only has a small block.

That's what causes the comments. Unless he is using a Windsor style block with a stroker to make a 427, the original "good old days" 427 is an FE engine. Some of the parts used in go-fast 428s were 427 parts. So for him to say .."I don't like FEs, I'm going 427", is about like him saying he don't like girls and then asking your sister out.... Not that it matters... His BBFs are what, 460s?

the fords that he does have they all have 427. the chevys he has are 502. he last purchase was a 34 ford coupe, but it has a 302 in it. he is pulling that out and putting in a 427 in there instead.

he has about 10-15 cars. i lost count, lol
