2001 Explorer XLT Trans problem
I have a 2001 Explorer 4dr XLT with a 4.0 SOHC and 5R55E transmission. I recently lost 3rd gear and above as well as reverse. If I pull it down into 1st gear it reacts fine, even performing engine braking, manually engaging 2nd gear also works fine. If I put it in drive it just slips, reverse is also gone with just a little drag at high rpms.
I've been reading about the 3rd/Reverse servo seal leaking as well as the awesome write up on the seperator plate/valve body gasket replacement. Problem is I don't have any experience with transmissions, although I have rebuilt engines.
I've also heard about the servo pin bore repair which may or may not be the source of the problem.
My question: (finally) Based on the description above (and flashing OD light -sorry I haven't pulled the code) are there any insightful guesses about whats going on with it?
I've been told by a reputable shop $1100.00 for the servo pin bore, or $1650 for a used trans (both have 90 day warranty)
I'm on a really tight budget, any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks for the help, the forum is great!
But all that is jumping the gun until we have some codes to talk about. Remember, a used transmission is going to have all the same failings as the one you already have.
