well it all started about a month ago. i was driving down the road and all of a sudden the alternator quit charging and my truck was about dead. i shut it off and then looked for the problem.
after a few tries the voltage came back up and started charging again. well it to me again last night so i went and got a new one. my old one tested bad on the machine. well, put the new one on and nothing. went back to the store and we looked around for a while. the alt. was magnatized but not outputing at the top of the alt. we looked the old one over again and to my suprise it actually ran this go around. everything is identical on the alts, so it has to be some elecrical short, cause i am not getting anything at all. and neither alt works when on the truck. the new or old one. can somebody give me something to look at before i go and waste alot of money at the shop. truck is a 97 expedition 5.4 4x4.
thanks,
Let me see if I have this straight: The alt's are OK off the truck but you aren't getting any output when ON the truck? Have you replaced the voltage reulator?
I think he probably has an internal regulator. I am not familiar with the newer alternators but they probably need an input signal to start charging. Do you have a small terminal or two? How did the store hook it up to test it? I think the input is the problem.
the test was done on the machine of the alt. the regulator is on the back of the alt. the input signal is in question right now. but the alt is magnatized. it has two plugs on back. one goes to dash for gauge. the other is three pin and we assume one is hot(input), one is ground, and the third is a variable ground(?).
