Well my clutch has been getting worse over the last 2 months. It started engaging higher and higher on the pedal, and now it doesnt even feel like it engages through the pedal and in the last couple days ive noticed rattles while driving and when i shut my truck off.
Luckily i went ahead and ordered a Southbend clutch last week and i should receive it sometime this week. If i do get it this week i want to go ahead and install it this weekend. My truck still has the original DMF in it and im swapping to a SMF. I was just wondering if there is any other parts related to the clutch that i need to check or change while im doing the clutch. Also if anybody has any tips on replacing the clutch please send them my way.
I originally was going to seperate the tranny and tcase and completely remove them from the truck but after talking to a mechanic friend who has done a few of these clutches he says to just removed the driveshaft...support tranny and tcase with jack..remove bellhosing bolts and slide tranny back as far as possible so i can work on the clutch.
Parts: You may want to look into a new clutch fork. I believe the dealer has one that is better than the one they came with.
Technique: The last time I did mine Transcase & tranny came out together but there were two of us to muscle it around. It also had to come all the way out so we could get in there to replace the Flywheel. Tricky balancing act.
Obviously you need:
Flywheel, Clutch, PP, throw out bearing, Pilot bushing, Alignment tool and fork if you so choose.
Some say to replace the slave cylinder while you are in there. I guess that all depends on how old it is and if it works fine. You choose. It can always be replaced later.
when you said it engages higher that made me think. Have you checked your linkage and bushings? I am not sure about the pre-powerstroke 7.3's but the powerstrokes have a plastic bushing in the linkage under the dash that wears out easily.
You may also ask this question in the other forum for pre-powerstrokes if it is your '93.
I hope this helps some. I am getting ready to do the same thing, mine is slipping when I really get on it.
As always, when clutch/flywheel issues come up, I say, talk to Rubberduck about valair clutch/flywheel packages. He'll get you in touch with his buddy at Valair. Well worth your time. I did my clutch this past winter. Single handed with the transfercase attached. Used a floor jack and some blocks. A littel tricky, but do-able. I took the ZF5 out of a '93 and bolted it straight up to my '96. Everything was the same. As for the clutch pedal bushings, not sure on that one.
Good luck!
Yeah i talked to rubberduck and he said to contact his buddy at valair..which i tried to do 3 times....once through email which i never got a reply...and twice through the phone which probably cost me long distance from canada and both times i had no luck getting in touch with dan at valair...and after talking to a local diesel performance shop uphere and hearing what the owner had to say about valair vs southbend i decided to go with a southbend clutch. i know alot of you guys here prefer valair...but i really thought about it and in the end ordered a southbend clutch....i should be installing it hopefully this weekend if it arrives and if i come to you guys next week saying the clutch sucks i should have got a valair....feel free to say i told you so.
and i did check all the pedal bushings and everything checks out...so the only other reason for my clutch problems would be a worn clutch from being so old...its the original DMF with 330,000 Kms on it.
whats the difference with the new clutch fork everybody is talking about? is it worth it to change them? and what about my rear main...someone told me i better replace it while im in there?
Sorry to hear about your trouble with Valair. Southbend is good too, so no worries. I got mine sent to theborderservices near Dunsieth ND and drove over to get it. Saved me a bundle on shipping. I use them for everything UPS over the border.
As for the other parts, it's just a good time to change things out. Easy to get at everything while it's apart and it's good insurance.
