Durospark magnetic pickup
I took apart a distributor to fix a hard to rotate shaft. While putting it back together I noticed that the vaccum advance moves the pickup back and forth around the base plate. This flexes the wires and is probably what makes them fail. It would be a good idea to carry a spare.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Nov-02 AT 10:27 PM (EST)]They use a high quality wire with many strands to help prevent this, but you would think eventually they would fail. Knock on wood, never had one fail yet though. It would probably cause a very hard to find bucking or missing on acceleration when the vacuum can moved.
And the old points systems had the same wire (one) running to the coil.
