i have a 87 ranger with the 2.9 and a buddy of mine backed it into a big ditch full of water then it backfired and died and alll the light bulbs blew...well we got it out but now it cuts out and misses and smells like gas but there are no leaks any one have any ideas on what to check? sometimes it will run fine but after a mile or 2 it starts cutting out again tfi maybe?? any help would be appreciated
after i got it out of the ditch it barley made it home the next day i put gas in it (thought it was out and thats y it sputterd into my driveway) it ran fine after that drove it 5 miles then it started the same thing its been out of the water for about a week oh yea the water only coverd up half the tailgate up to the back tires (cab and front of bed were out of water just back tires and bumper in water)
My aero was in so deep ditches too. I had dirt under distributor cap and hight voltage leaks (looked like sparks in dark)...
Try to cap out, clean cap inside, rotor. Check coil for bad insolation, ditr, water, corrozion...
Onese I got in deep puddle and my aero ran till distributor was wet. was towed out. Cleaned distributor and wires, but later changed oil, tranny fluid and rear end lubricant. Got imulsion inside.
Do you have a hole in your gas tank? Sounds like you have water in your gas. Also you might have a bare wire in the rear for your lights to blow. Water is a very good conductor of electricity.
yea there are bare wires in the back i figured thats why the lights went but sence its been out of the water i ran out of gas in it put gas in it and it ran fine for a little bit then started cutting out again its getting way to much gas you can smell it , it smokes a little bit but its black
Check to see if the vacuum line to the fuel pump regulator blew off when it backfired. That would jam your pressure to the max and make the engine run very rich.

ill check the reg here in a min but on the pass side there are 2 relays bolted to the fender the one in the back if u tap it with something the truck dies and is hard to start anyone know what it is? ill take a pic of it later and for the fuel pressure does pushing the button and if gas hits the hood its ok work? lol.......
So, I say to the Doc, "It hurts when I do that." He sez, Quit doing that.
If it dies when you hit it, quit hitting it.
The gas has to drill through the sheet metal... not.
Is the relay loose in the harness/mount? Or is the relay loose inside? Get a new one, they are cheap, and test it the same way, or swap two identical relays and see if the problem follows.

On a 87 one of those relays is the fuel pump relay and they do go bad due to corrosion and /or weld the contacts together(pump won't shut off)as he said replace it before you do any thing else.If the pump does not shut off it can cause some of the very problem's you are having. One quick check is to remove the gas cap,put you ear down close to the open fuel fill have someone turn the ingiton from off to on without starting it,the pump should run for a few secounds than cut off ,if it does not cut off the relay is the most likly problem. I would change it anyway cause if it killed the motor by messing with it ......it ain't right!!!!
