99 v-10 motorhome problems!

hi guy's,new here and was hoping for some help.my motorhome acted up on me today,it is a 99 chassis that i tow an 8000lb trailer with.the first thing that happened was that the speedo quit working then i parked it for several hours, when i restarted it the speedo worked for about 2 miles and quit again, then the check engine light came on.after 2 or so miles the transmission felt like it went right into neutral,it was still in drive but the engine would rev like in neutral.i pulled over and put it in low gear and it seemed to be okay but the 1-2 shift hit very hard, then when i stopped at the next corner the engine died but restarted normal.last year i thought i hurt the transmission and when i had it scanned it turned out to be a cam sensor..........if anyone can help me out here i would really appreciate it.thanks in advance.

Brad, I also have a 99 v10 motorhome chassis, and I have had similar things happen. It usually fixed itself with a shutdown, shift into park, and restart. It sounds as if yours also did. I bought a scanner and found a code set for the speed sensor. It's located on top of the rear end. I had mine changed at a local Ford dealer, but it looks easy to change. That was four or five years ago, and it's happened a couple of times since. I really think the transmission position sensor is the culprit, since it tells the computer what gear you've selected. If it doesn't get the right digital signal, it doesn't know what to do. It is easy to get to, on the driver's side rear of the transmission. If mine becomes more troublesome, I'll change it.

A scanner can pay for itself with one trip to the dealer.

Good luck,

Paul

With the inoperative speedo and erratic shifting, it sounds like the speed sensor has failed (as Paul noted above). This is pretty common and should be a pretty easy fix depending on how hard it is to get to it through the RV stuff!

Some auto parts stores (Autozone, etc) will read the codes for free-- assuming you can find the OBD port. It can be pretty well hidden by some RV makers.

Is this a Class A or Class C motorhome?

One is an E-series chassis (Class C?), the other is the F53 (Class A?) (forget which is which).

If it's the F53 chassis, you have the VSS in the rear end.

If it's the E-series chassis, you have a sensor on the tranny where the speedo gear would normally be.

Either way, sounds like the speed sensor is going bad.

Geez - - We can't have our moderator thirsting for knowledge.

The 53 is a Class A

E chassis would be a B or C
