Hey yall its been a long time since ive had time to post!! I got a new job that pays verrrrryyy good (thank you college edu!!) and I have been looking at getting a newer truck or suv. Ive been looking at a RED 2001 F150 XLT ext cab, sport 4x4, 5.4 v8 with 78,000mi for 6,999. There is also a 2001 Expy Eddie Bauer, 5.4 4x4 with 75,000mi for 5,999. Im leaning toward the truck because I do haul stuff in the bed of my current truck and its nice to not have to worry about it getting dirty. 90% of my driving during the week is on the thruway and country driving on the weekend.
There is nothing majorly wrong with my current truck but I want to upgrade now before I get an apartment or have more expenses. Ive driven my cousins 03 and I love it. It rides nice, has better seats, handles better and has a nicer interior. I was wondering how many of yall out there have trucks similar to the one(s) im looking at? What can I expect from it as far as mileage, common repairs and tweakability(is that a word?). Thanks alot guys I will appreciate any input!!
On my 01 I got 14 city and 18 highway with the 5.4 and it was a 4x4. Unless you are paying cash, I would consider a new F-150, the deals are truelyy unbeatable right now. There almost giving them a way. 60 months at 0 interst, employee discounts for everyone and large rebates. Now is an awesome time to buy a new F-150 while gas prices are still so high. Also a new F-150 is comming out for 09, so the 08's are at give away prices.
get a new one, be a better savings in the long run, wendells right with all the financing incentives now you cant beat it! the older trucks are nice, and as long as they were maintained should be fine. if you still want to get a used truck i strongly advise you not to get one from a used car dealer. a lot of those cars are picked up at auctions and put right on the lot the same day. they usually dont even bother to check the oil. ive been to those auctions and theres a lot of crap on the market. the best way to get a used car is to buy from a private seller. for the trucks your looking at the owner most likely has had it since new and can provide a detailed history of maintenance and repairs and will most likely be honest of any work that needs to be done on them. but at least check out the new ones cause you cant beat the deals they got now! hope this helps you!

Before buying an older 5.4L, maybe you should visit the forums and read about changing the spark plugs. If they break in the heads, it can be quite the hassle. Not a 5.0L that is for sure.
Mileage about 15, if you get the 4.6 about 20.
Make sure it does not have brake vibration.
Buying at a dealership or not, $3000 max for that year (2001) vehicle. It can't be financed and they are not selling with the current gas prices. You can do much better then $6-7000 dollars for a 4x4 from CL.
Thanks guys I was looking at that truck from a dealer by where I work and he gets alot of very nice trucks in the place. i know people that have bought vehicles from him in the past and they havent had any problems. I am still looking at private sellers and Ive seen a few nice F250's with the 7.3 for cheap but I dont think I want a diesel. About the breaking/blown plugs; if you torque them down and use anti-seize there shouldnt be a problem, my cousins truck never had any problem with that. Id never buy a truck without going through it in the lot as much as I could to make sure nothing was visibly wrong and take it for a test drive. Its may be a little while before I actually get one but i would not pass up a good deal. Thanks guys, I better get back to work haha!
