I found a Dana 60 rear diff from a 1979 F250 4*4 for $50. I know the spring perchs will be wrong but what other issues might I have, using this axle. Is it expensize/hard to have the spring perchs relocated. Would this be a good axle. I emailed the guy for the numbers so maybe I can get thoses. I hope to grabe the drive shaft while I'm at it. I also have him measuring the backing plate distance. Anyone know off hand what a 49 F-3 should be, and what tolerances I have.
What year is the Dana 60 out of? I swapped in one out of a 69 F-250 into my 53 and it was an absolute bolt in, didn't have to change anything else. Not sure if that will work for your 49 though.
Yeah I forgot to mention thet the Dana is from a 1979 F250. I've been looking for a 67-72 rear end but all the junk yard laugh when I mention that age. I found one but they wanted $300. So in other wards I'm just trying to find any F-250 rear end to work.
The 73 and newer axles are going to be too wide (by about 6 inches) to fit under the stock fenders. You could pretty easily relocate the spring perches, however you'd have to get some massively backspaced rims to be able to use the 79 axle. The $300 you were quoted for the 67-72 axle may not look like the cheap option, but I think it could be a lot cheaper/easier overall and could save you some headaches. I know the 1969 Dana 60 I put under my F-3 was a simple swap and bolted right in like it was meant to be there.
I got some numbers from the rear diffs the guy has
Diff#1
41-10
4.10
Width backingplate to backingplate - 57''
width rim center to rim center - 67.25''
rerches c-c - 44''
Diff#2
DITA-UA
60-198-27
3.73
Width bp to bp - 54.5''
width rc to rc - 63.25''
perches c to c - 40.5''
Anyone know what these might be from. Was told Ford F250's. They are 8 lug, and the Diff#2 looks right for size. (I measured mine ouside in the dark just now).
