E4OD meltdown?

My girlfriend was driving my '92 Bronco the other day when it decided to puke its ATF out all over the place. She managed to pull over and stop pretty quickly, but that was all she wrote. Lots of smoke (I assume from the ATF dripping on the exhaust) and the tranny wouldn't do anything. No go.
She called me at work, and I had her get it towed in on a flatbed. I haven't had time to take a good look yet, but I'm planning on pulling it this week. There was a puddle under it on the flatbed, the the driver said there was a huge puddle of ATF on the ground when he picked it up. The tailgate and back window were nicely greased up, too.
I'm thinking blown torque converter seal or front pump seal. This trans has blown fluid out in years past, but never more than a quart at a time. I read somewhere that the trans will blow fluid out the vent when the pressure gets too high.
Anybody had an E4OD do this before? It has 160K on it, so I figure it's time for a rebuild anyway. I'd just like to know what caused it to blow so I know whether it's a minor rebuild or complete meltdown.

There are a couple of other posts about fluid dumping from the E4OD.

However, it sounds like the mileage and this episode would warrent a full rebuild. Why do the R & R labor and put a questionable unit back in service?

Good luck.
