!990, E250, 4.9....Hello All. Awhile back I posted that I was having problems with a mysterious overheating condition ... seems I overlooked the obvious.... the radiator was plugged. ran some acid through it, seems fine now. Now I have a new question for you knowledgable folks. I planted a new ( rebuilt) distributor. I put it in at 0 TDC, but am not sure about setting the timing. Right now I removed the "spout" plug , set timing a 0, then replaced the "spout" plug, though I have a "stumble, even after re-gapping the plugs to "44". Is this correct? Should I remove "spout" and set timing at 10 degrees then replace spout plug? Should I leave "spout" in place and set at 10 degrees? Need some help please.... Thanks, Al
You're on the right track, just picked the wrong number. Remove the SPOUT with the engine off, fire it up and set timing at 10º (or a couple more if you're feeling crazy), then turn it off and replace the SPOUT.
And in regard to your other post, you DO want to use the timing marks on the right side (passenger) of the engine. It would have been nice if Ford lost the marks on the left side of the engine when they knew they weren't gonna be using them anymore to aviod confusion, but if you've been working on Fords for any length of time, you know that's par for the course.
Pat, thanks for your reply. I am using the timing numbers cast into the cover on the drivers side, The numbers that should be on the passenger side would be on a bracket bolted on. For me this bracket does not exist, thats why I am using the drivers side marks. Should work out the same?.
Well, I'd say you need to find the right bracket before you can accurately time it. I bought my truck in May of '01 and almost immediately proceeded to time it to 14º on the wrong set of marks. Seemed to RUN just fine, but a couple years ago, after reading about the proper set of marks to use, I re-timed it...I must have set it to somewhere around 30-35º initial timing!!!
The only thing I can figure is that the knock sensor that we EFI guys are lucky enough to have sent a signal to the computer to pull all the timing that I mistakenly put in. Consider it a lucky lesson learned!
