I'm looking at trucks and found one I like. I asked the question on the Super Duty board about V10 vs 6.0 and I was surprised to see more V10 votes and "get a 7.3" messages than anything else.
What kind of problems might I encounter with a 2004 F350 6.0 with 49,000 miles on it? The truck is completely stock and doesn't look abused. I think it was used to pull a fifth wheel camper. My friend has an 03 and it's been a pretty good truck. He did have the turbo replaced under warranty.
I've driven the V10 and wasn't impressed, it didn't have the power I expected. I started off wanting a gasser but now I think the diesel may be the way to go.
Make sure you get an oasis report before you purchase,My 05 has given me some trouble but warranty has covered everything ,. ball joints ,turbos, egr cooler, egr valve, injectors, brake callibers, and im probably forgetting something.I didnt get one till after i bought it.thank god for the warranty. FFF

Before I purchased my '04 CC it had 27k miles on it, I brought the VIN to the Oasis thread to have a back ground run...and the truck came up with truly nothing exciting; though the passenger rear door had been repainted at 13k. Until yesterday I had not had a single problem with the truck outside the price spread of diesel ($0.75 to $1 higher than gas). I do know that the truck rides like a Lincoln running down the highway pulling the trailer with no effort and without a trailer at 2000 rpm I can get 21 mpg on the highway. I'd buy the truck again given the chance.
I requested an Oasis report through the thread above, I never saw it show up in the thread so I figure it has been intercepted by one of the guys who provide this great service. They did one for me last week on a different truck I was looking at, but I passed on it due to the high mileage and being out of warranty. It had twice the miles and was nearly the same price as this one. I never saw that post show up in the thread either.
i got rid of an 04 v10 super cab for an 04 6.0 crew cab and even though i've had an issue with the turbo (i just don't drive it enough) i wouldn't take a v10 again if someone gave it to me
well first you need to figure out if it has an 03 engine or an 04 one. If you look at the sticker in the door jamb with the tire pressures and such it will tell you the build date, if it was late 03 then it has an 03 engine, if its any in 04 then you have an 04 engine. 03 engines the ICP sensors tend to leak oil and will need to be replaced, with a new connector to go with it. This is kind of a pita since on the 03's the ICP sensor is behind the turbo next to the IPR. On 04 and up its on the right valve cover right next to the glow plug module. The 03 engines don't typically pop EGR coolers, but I have seen it happen, just not nearly as common as 04 and up. Injectors are always something to look for that you can easily kill by not changing your fuel filters regularly, they don't like to run low on fuel. But if you keep up with your maintenence these 6.0's can go relatively problem free.
When i was looking I was looking for a diesel, and a crew cab, other then that I didnt know what I wanted. I must have drove two dozen trucks, and in doing so I drove many 04 and older and many 05-07 trucks. I cant stress enough how much better the 05-07 trucks ride and drive. So from that point I decided I was looking for nothing but an 05-07truck. Just something to keep in mind. Local ford dealer here has a beautiful 05 crew cab fx4 lariat 58K miles for 25K which IMO is a fair deal. Just something to think about.
I purchased an '04 F350 DRW to pull my new 5th wheel. I love the truck the only problem I encountered was the "hot side" turbo hose blowing off...easily fixed with the wisdom of this site and ball joints (which I understand has and continues to be a Ford problem). No other problems. Again I love this truck and any minor (and some major) issues are usually explained in this great forum.
The 6.0 -s , just like any other vehicles has some issues, some weak points. No matter if it's an 03-04 or it's an 05-06. I understand why some people say "get a 7.3", but the 6.0 is where you get what you expect from a truck like this. My next door neighbor had a 7.3, I've seen him more under the hood, than driving it ??!!
Couple things, what you should expect to go bad, or replace/modify before it happens. Most important are head studs. The 6.0 is famous to blow the head gaskets, Mr. Ford decided to install really weak bolts at the beginning, you can stretch them even without a tuner. The best mod, what you can do on a 6.0 are the studs. Other known problem is the EGR cooler, you can delete it for a small amount of money, and you can forget about it. The next is the HPO system, most likely after 04, the fitting goes bad. If you do these updates, and make sure you do the maintenance regularly / fuel filter is a must / you get a relatively bullettproof engine. Well, sensor here, gasket there, but you wont have to dig in to your engine and your pocket deep again.
It's a good looking truck BTW, I do like the 2 tone paint.....
Mark,
That truck sound like a really good deal!
If it fit's your needs/wants and that's what you want to see in the driveway, Go for it!
Then once you get an SCT, you'll be happy you didn't get a gasser.
The picture is in my driveway, and it looked good sitting there. I hooked up to my camper and went for a drive on the second test drive. I didn't even know my camper was back there and it didn't smoke at all. All I need to do now is see the Oasis report and talk to the banker if it looks good.
I own an '04 f-250 w/50k miles and I have noticed lately that it is not starting very quikly. It seems to crank slowly and seems kinda sluggish for a moment. Once it starts it is fine and if I run it for a while, shut it off and re-start it, it fires right up. I put a new alternator in it about a month ago and two new batteries about 3 months ago. Even if I leave the charger on it all night it acts the same way. Some similar posts mention a starter problem. Could that be the cause?
On a seperate note, I pull a 11,000 lb. bumper pull toy hauler and was wondering if that was a lot of weight. The truck is stock except for turbo back exhaust and it just doesnt seem to have the power pulling the trailer as I would expect from a diesel. Any comments?
