hi all, I have a 69 short box that i put an aod out of a 91 mustang. I have a 302 and all went quite well untile i came to hooking up the shifter. I know that the chevy guys and street roder's have a cable to hook up the column shifter. I can't seem to find one for the ford truck. I have a floor shifter from a mustang, but diden't want to go this way. Wondering if anyone else has solved this proplem. stanyol69
Stan, I believe it is called a tv or rv cable. There should have been one going from the tranny to the engine from the car. I also believe that Lokar has the needed cable.
I have never hooked up one but am going from recall reading the posts.
i hate to ask but i am having a problem identifing a aod from a aode , does the trans that you are installing have a electical connection on the case above the pan and does it have a electrical connection at the speedo cable ? how do i tell the differnce from a aod and aode ? sorry to highjack but i need info .(im on vacation and need to finish my project , but think i have a aode which cant be used without the computer ) . thanks rg
Jowilker The tv cable goes from the carburetor to the transmission. It has to do with the kick down. I need the cable from the column to the trans. for park and drive, if there is such a thing.
Inkahootz the aode is electric and needs the computer
You are right that the TV cable runs from the accelerator linkage to the transmission, but it has a lot more to "do with" than the kickdown. If you try to run an AOD without a properly adjusted TV cable, you will destroy the transmission in short order.
I've got the same setup in my 70 sw. There is a cable setup out there, I just don't remember which company made it. I don't think Lokar had one when I was researching.
When I did mine there were no cables available so I did mine the hard way.
The problem is you can't get a straight shot from the column shifter to the trans. I got a bell crank from a later model F150 and modified it to work with my column shift and a home made linkage from the bell crank to the trans. It works great and it saves the original look of the interior but it was a lot of trial and error to get it correct. A cable setup sure sounds a lot easier. I'll try to find the ad that showed it.
P.S. that tv cable makes the trans shift and it must be adjusted properly.
Thanks lance I will give Locar a try
Thanks to mcdobson also The shop that rebuilt the aod insisted that i bring it back when done and they would adjust the tv cable.
Off subject My daughter lives in Roseville Cal. I go there every Christmas
lokar makes a shift cable for the aod but it works with a gm column or a aftermarket column . they said it was cut to fit . i will see if i can find the part # . i looked at it the other day for my ride . thanks rg
Did you look at a Kugel cable setup? Used on street rods for column shifting.
Another is the early ford Aerostar floor shifters there tall and look like a mustang unit on steroids, has cable activation. and the correct AOD detent.
OK stanyol69,
According to Hank at Idiit, they have a cable shift kit #2802550010 that fits a 21/4" Ford column to an AOD for $197.17. Might be worth it. ididit inc. - Your Steering Column Specialist or any hot rod shop or maybe summit.
Let us know if you use one. I'd be courious how it works out.
