Overloading Light Switch

Hi,
I have just bought a F350 1990 Truck, and someone has put a toggle switch to operate the running lights, as it over loads the Main Switch.
This being the case is this normal, and can I fit a Solenoid
in the curcuit to over come this situation, and can anyone give me a Wiring Diagram to support fitting a Solenoid.

See the tech articles (
https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/index.html)here
(Examples: "brighter lights/whites", headlamp relay for a 1978, etc.) to see how you can put a relay into your lighting system.

You need a "relay" - a solenoid is what works the switch inside the relay, or throws the bendix out on GM-type starters. A solenoid is an electromagnetic "muscle" - a relay is a solenoid-operated switch, which is what you want. Anyway - semantics...

Get this type since it's inexpensive, VERY common, and reliable:

Wire one of the trigger terminals to the brown parking light circuit and the other to ground. Hook the center switching terminal to the battery thru a fuse and the normally-open terminal to the lights you want to control. The wiring diagram is printed on the side of the relay and the terminals are numbered on the bottom.
